Juventus: Thuram flies to Lyon for rehab, no return before 2027

Khephren Thuram's recovery is entering a new phase, but away from Turin. The French midfielder left Continassa in the last few hours to head to Lyon, where he will spend around two weeks following a targeted, personalised rehabilitation programme, according to Tuttosport and Sky Sport. It is a step planned together with the club, designed to bring the player back to full training gradually, with no shortcuts.

It was at the Hopital Privé Jean Mermoz that Dr. Bertrand Sonnery-Cottet operated on Thuram on September 3rd for patellofemoral syndrome, a condition in the right knee that had left him unable to train for months without pain and swelling, as Calciomercato.com reports. The surgery went as well as hoped, and the midfielder will now continue his post-operative programme under the guidance of the same specialist who carried it out, before moving on to the next stage.

Once the two weeks in France are over, Thuram will return to Turin to tackle the trickiest part of the process: full reathletisation, the gradual work that should bring him back to regular training with the squad. Juventus, Tuttosport writes, are taking every precaution to avoid a setback, and a return to the pitch is not expected before the start of 2027: Calciomercato.com puts it at no earlier than January, with a real chance the timeline slips further depending on how the knee responds to treatment in the coming weeks.

For Juventus it is an absence that has now lasted the whole of the summer: Thuram has yet to play a single minute this season, sidelined by the knee issue even before the league campaign began. It is a notable gap in midfield, given the role the Frenchman was meant to play in the club's new cycle, one the side has had to cover so far by leaning on other options in the squad.

For anyone who picked him up for fantacalcio hoping for a quick recovery, this is a further delay: better to write him off at least until February and look elsewhere among the Juventus midfielders available, since the return date, rather than getting closer, has slipped again. There is no more precise timeline for now: it will all depend on how the knee reacts to the specific work of these two weeks in Lyon, and on any further checks once he is back in Turin.
